Capital Works - Changed Traffic & Parking Conditions

Car Parking and Alternative Transport Strategies

The current level of construction activity is expected to peak in 2010. We are expecting that some 500 contractors will be working on the Acton Campus to progress a range of capital infrastructure projects including: Colleges of Science; the Eccles Institute (John Curtin School of Medical Research Stage 3); Laurus Wing Stage 2 (Student Accommodation) and the recently announced National Security College project. The demand for car parks has always outweighed the supply, however availability of car parks will be exacerbated by the increased capital works program. The Facilities and Services Division is continuing to develop a range of car parking and alternative transport strategies aimed at alleviating the impact these works are having on the ANU Community and visitors to our Campus. An outline of these strategies is as follows:

Car parking

  • Construction / upgrade of two (2) car parks on Daley Road located beside the Bruce Hall Packard Wing to address residential student needs and manage contractor overflow.
  • Construction of temporary contractor car parks on Dickson Road (Plant Culture Area) and Clunies Ross Road for the Colleges of Science and the Eccles Institute (JCSMR 3) projects.

Alternative Transport Strategies

Current strategies include:

  • Timely Tredlies - ANU has a bicycle fleet of 60 TREK bicycles available for staff to use for intra-campus travel. Find out more...  ANU Carpool Scheme - carpooling is an arrangement whereby several participants (staff and/or students) travel together in one vehicle, sharing the costs of parking and driving. You do not have to have your own car to participate in the program. Find out more...

We are also exploring strategies of:

  • Off campus parking solutions;
  • Operation of shuttle buses between key locations and the Acton Campus;
  • and Car Sharing Scheme – similar to Car Rental Systems, vehicles can be rented out for long or short periods at affordable rates.
